How to Knit Wheat Ear Model Baby Cardigan

Knitting a baby cardigan is a great way to make a handmade gift for a new arrival or your own little one. The wheat ear stitch is a classic stitch pattern that creates a beautiful texture, and is perfect for a cozy and warm cardigan. Follow the steps below to knit a wheat ear model baby cardigan.

Materials:

2 skeins of baby yarn

Circular knitting needles, size 6 (4 mm)

Stitch markers

Scissors

Tapestry needle

Buttons

Instructions:

Back:

      Cast on 52 stitches.

      Knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 2 inches.

      Begin the wheat ear stitch pattern. The pattern is as follows:

Row 1: Knit all stitches.

Row 2: Purl all stitches.

Row 3: Knit 1, *knit 3 together, then without taking the stitches off the left needle, knit the first stitch again and slip all three stitches off the left needle. Repeat from * to last 2 stitches, knit 2.

Row 4: Purl all stitches.

Row 5: Knit 1, *yarn over, knit 1, yarn over, knit 3 together, then without taking the stitches off the left needle, knit the first stitch again and slip all three stitches off the left needle. Repeat from * to last stitch, knit 1.

Row 6: Purl all stitches.

Repeat these six rows until the back measures 8 inches from the cast on edge, ending with row 4.

    Next row: Knit 26 stitches, bind off the next 14 stitches, knit the remaining 26 stitches.

    Working on the left side only, decrease 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row and every row until 10 stitches remain.

    Work even until the armhole measures 4 inches from the beginning of the armhole shaping. Bind off all stitches.

Fronts (make 2):

      Cast on 26 stitches.

      Knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 2 inches.

      Begin the wheat ear stitch pattern.

Work as for the back until the armhole measures 3 inches from the beginning of the armhole shaping, ending with row 4.

    Next row: Knit 10 stitches, bind off the next 6 stitches, knit the remaining 10 stitches.

    Working on the left side only, decrease 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row and every row until 4 stitches remain.

    Work even until the armhole measures 4 inches from the beginning of the armhole shaping. Bind off all.
